Holland. Bratislava. William.

Hello again! I say it's high time for some more photos and infos on what's been going on. During these past two months we have been busy as bees organizing two big conferences and publishing new material. Plus we have another new colleague on our team named William. During the next three weeks, Alenka and I will be on furlough to Germany...woohoo! The main purpose is to present the TWR ministry and our roles in it to supporters and anyone interested, as well as churches, Bible groups, etc. We'll be in the Garmisch area, Lake Constance and Baden-Wuerttemberg as well as in Hesse. So if you're not going somewhere during the Pentacost holidays, let us know. It'd be great if we could meet up! Many greetings from the two of us!


Hallo! Es ist mal wieder Zeit euch einige Fotos und aktuelle Infos zu zeigen. Während den letzten beiden Monaten waren wir fleissig wie die Bienen (sagt man das eigentlich so im Deutschen?). Es gab nämlich zwei große Konferenzen zu organisieren, sowie etliche Publikationen herauszubringen. Darüber hinaus haben wir einen neuen Mitarbeiter, William, worüber wir uns sehr freuen. In den kommmenden drei Wochen werden Alenka und ich in Deutschland (Garmisch, Bodensee, Ba-Wü, Hessen) unterwegs sein, um die Arbeit von TWR, und insbesondere unsere Arbeit vorzustellen. Somit wollen wir Unterstützer und Interessierte, sowie einige Kirchengemeinden und Bibelkreise besuchen. Falls ihr nicht während der Pfingstferien unterwegs seid, wäre es sehr schön euch zu treffen. Last week we were in Holland for a global conference. But who wants to see boring conference photos (the rooms look all the same around the world anyway)? Let's see some 'real' Holland impressions :-)

Letzte Woche waren wir in Holland auf einer internationalen Konferenz. Aber wer will schon langweilige Fotos aus dem Konferenzsaal anschauen? (Die sehen überall gleich aus) Hier sind einige 'richtige' Hollandimpressionen :-)

Now just think of us 10 inches taller and with blond hair and then we totally look Dutch.  
Nun stell dir einfach vor, dass wir 20cm größer sind, sowie blonde Haare haben. Dann sehen wir richtig holländisch aus.

What would Holland be without windmills! Was wäre Holland ohne Windmühlen! 

  

Three ships a-sailing in the cathedral of St. Bevo in Haarlem. It looks like they are floating. The other picture shows the entrance of the house where Corrie ten Boom grew up. What an amazing woman and family with a powerful testimony during such dark days of the Third Reich. Furthermore, I found out that TWR broadcast Corrie ten Boom's scripts some years ago.

Was für eine herausragende Frau und Familie, die ein starkes Zeugnis während des Dritten Reiches geben konnten. Ich fand ausserdem heraus, dass TWR die Skripte von Corrie ten Boom vor einigen Jahren im Radio gesendet haben.

 And here is the communications team from all over the world. 7 countries...if you include Alaska as a country, which was a hotly debated topic ;-)

Hier ist nun unsere Kommunikationsabteilung aus aller Welt. Genauergesagt aus 7 verschiedenen Ländern...wenn man Alaska als eigenen Staat erkennt, was sehr lebhaft diskutiert wurde ;-)

 Back in Bratislava, Marina, my Slovak teacher, makes sure that despite all my trips, I don't forget my Slovak. :-)
Zurück in Bratislava stellt Marina, meine Slowakisch-Lehrerin, sicher, dass ich aufgrund meiner Reisen mein Slowakisch nicht vergesse :-)

Pastor Earl and his wife Delma are on the right photo. We've had a great time with them, but, alas, it's time for them to go back to Montana. However, thankfully, we'll be getting a new pastor next month.
Rechts sieht man unseren Pastor Earl und seine Frau Delma. Es war eine schöne Zeit, aber nun rückt der Abschied nahe, da sie wieder nach Montana gehen. Der neue Pastor kommt schon im Juni, worüber wir uns sehr freuen.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is our newest colleague to the TWR team. He loves to take photos (also of cows ;-) ), he's already missing sweet tea from the South (Nestea just doesn't compare) and dodgeball. Yes Dodgeball...so watch out when you come to Bratislava!

Meine Damen und Herren, ich präsentiere...William, unser neuester Kollege bei TWR. Er liebt Fotografie (anscheinend auch von Kühen ;-) ), sowie Eistee, den es so gut nur in den Südstaaten gibt (Nestea kann man einfach nicht damit vergleichen) sowie Abtreffball. Tatsächlich! Passt also auf, wenn du nach Bratislava kommst!

Easter service. Ostergottesdienst.

As someone mentioned in church today, we should not see Easter as a one day event each year, but to internalize it as Christians every day. How true! I was moderating the church service today, and so I thought I would post the famous Easter words in some of the languages represented at our church. See if you can pronounce them :-)

Wie mir jemand heute im Gottesdienst sagte, sollten wir Ostern nicht nur als ein besonderer Tag im Jahr sehen, sondern als Christen jeden Tag feiern und verinnerlichen. Wie wahr! Heute habe ich den Gottesdienst moderiert und da habe ich gedacht, ich stelle die folgenden beruehmten Osterworte in mehreren Sprachen vor, die auch in unserer Gemeinde repraesentiert sind. Mal sehen, ob du es aussprechen kannst. :-)

As if Easter wasn't reason enough to celebrate, Delma, the pastor's wife, had her birthday today as well. A nice excuse for eating more cake.

Als ob Ostern nicht Grund genug fuer ein Fest waere, durften wir auch den Geburtstag von Delma, die Frau des Pastors, heute feiern.

A weekend getaway. Ab in den (Kurz-) Urlaub.

We were given two tickets from a friend for a weekend getaway at Stare Hory, a small village in the Low Tatra mountains behind Alenka's college town Banska Bystrica. Great opportunity to take a needed break, walk and talk and enjoy the cozy bed&breakfast place (incl. the massage chair :-) .

Wir haben zwei Tickets von einer Freundin für eine Wochenendreise nach Stare Hory bekommen, ein kleines Dörfchen in den Niederen Tatrabergen hinter Banska Bystrica, wo Alenka studiert hat. Eine tolle Möglichkeit eine Pause vom Alltagstrubel zu nehmen, um dort spazieren zu gehen, miteinander reden, und die gemütliche Frühstückspension genießen (inkl. Massagestuhl :-) .

Our goal of the hike: to visit the St. Mary's fountain, where Mary - as the story goes - appeared to a child some centuries ago. Well, we waded through knee-high masses of snow, discovered this pretty chapel, and - a classic one - helped an old lady over an icy street. That wasn't quite easy to accomplish, I must say. Then we hiked straight into the mountains for an hour until we noticed...we must have missed the fountain somewhere along the line. So we headed straight back to the b&b for a cup of coffee. Fine with me.

Unser Ziel der Wanderung: den Marienbrunnen, wo Maria einem Kind vor einigen Jahrhunderten erschienen ist. So zumindest die Geschichte. Nun, wir stapften durch kniehohe Schneemassen, entdeckten diese schöne Kapelle, halfen - ganz klassisch - eine Oma bei Glatteis über die Straße (ein nicht ganz ungefährliches Unterfangen!) und wanderten eine Stunde lang in die Berge hinein bis wir merkten...den Brunnen müssen wir wohl verpasst haben. Ab ging es wieder in die Pension zum Kaffeetrinken. Immerhin.

Ein Wochenendausflug zaubert einem ganz schnell ein Lächeln auf das Gesicht!

Serbia part 1. Serbien Teil 1.

I don't know who was more bored on this warm, sunny day in the middle of the middle of nowhere...the Hungarian or the Serbian border guards. But hey, they let us through even though such transport vans aren't normally supposed to pass here. But if you have two ladies like Alenka and her friend Marjenka, even the coldest customs officer's heart melts away!

Ich weiß nicht, wer an diesem schönen, warmen Tag mitten, aber auch wirklich mitten in der Pampa gelangweilter ausgesehen hat ...die ungarischen oder die serbischen Zollbeamte. Eigentlich durften wir an dieser Stelle nicht mit diesem Lieferwagen passieren. Aber wenn man zwei solche Damen wie Alenka und ihre Freundin Marjenka bei sich hat, schmelzen selbst steinerne Zollbeamter-Herzen vor sich hin!

After arriving in Alenka's hometown, we got straight to the point by celebrating Tijana's 2nd birthday (Alenka's niece) with many relatives and lots of cake. The noise and emotional level was 'Balkan-esque', and particularly cordial. I was especially happy about the fact that Tijana isn't so shy towards me anymore. I now go by the name of Kem, since Frank is a bit too much for now, I guess.

Bei Alenka daheim angekommen, ging es gleich zur Sache. Der 2. Geburtstag von Tijana, Alenkas Nichte, wurde ausgiebig mit Verwandten und viel Kuchen gefeiert. Der Lärmpegel und die Emotionen der Gespräche war "Balkanüblich", vor allem herzlich. Vor allem freute es mich, dass Tijana mir gegenüber nicht mehr so schüchtern ist. Ich heiße nun Kem. Frank ist wohl noch ne Nummer zu hoch.

A trip to Serbia isn't complete without a Pljeskavica hamburger at this stand in Novi Sad. The only problem is the decision-making of the toppings. Life is tough!

Was wäre eine Reise nach Serbien ohne einen Pljeskavica Hamburger, wie an diesem Stand in Novi Sad? Problematisch ist allerdings die Auswahl der reichhaltigen Garnierungen. Das Leben ist wirklich hart!

We were really happy about this one: Alenka's mother Katarina won a bike in a local prize drawing contest. Of course this made local headlines as well. She certainly deserves this one!

Da haben wir uns besonders gefreut: Alenkas Mutter Katarina hat einen Fahrrad in einem lokalen Preisausschreiben gewonnen, was natuerlich gleich in die Zeitung kam. Sie hat es wahrlich verdient!

Serbia part 2. Serbien Teil 2.

I love this advertisement for this year's concert of Alenka's former youth choir. The topic of the concert was 'Endless God' and the theme of God's various characteristics was the thread throughout the songs.

Dieser Flyer fuer das Jahreskonzert von Alenkas ehemalige Jugendchor ist richtig gut gelungen. Das Thema des Konzertes war 'Ewiger Gott', wo Gottes verschiedene Merkmale in den Liedern thematisiert wurden.

Approximately 40 choir members and band were on stage. First-class concert with television crews on site as well. Simply awesome, professional and uplifting. Hope I can be there every year.

Ungefähr 40 Chorsänger und Bandmitglieder teilten sich die Bühne. Ein richtig gelungenes Konzert, professionell organisiert und zudem sehr ermutigend. Dazu noch einige Fernseh-crews vor Ort. Hoffentlich schaffe ich es jedes Jahr dorthin.

Full house! Approximately 1500 people came from the entire region.

Da war die Bude voll. Ca. 1500 Leute kamen aus der ganzen Region.
