I wonder why they gave me those curious, suspicious looks at the market in Kazakhstan. Maybe because of me taking photos? But buying some figs and nuts helped ease the situation. :-)

As a notorious drummer, this instrument called a doira is music to my ears. It is a common instrument in Uzbekistan, but can also be found elsewhere in the region.
Als berühmt-berüchtigter Trommler war dieses Instrument, eine Doira, Musik in meinen Ohren. Sie wird besonders in Usbekistan, aber auch sonst in der Region gerne gespielt.

I had to rub my eyes a few times. This is Kazakhstan? It's the downtown business district of Almaty, the largest city in the country. The country has abundant natural gas reserves and other resources (with the distribution of wealth being an entirely different story.)
Da musste ich doch stutzen. Das hier ist Kasachstan? Das Bild stammt zeigt den Geschäftsviertel von Almaty, die größte Stadt des Landes. Das Land besitzt reiche Gasvorkommen, wie auch andere Bodenschätze. (Nur ist die Wohlstandsverteilung eine ganz andere Geschichte.)
